I have been a digital nomad, working from anywhere, for around 6 years. It’s been an amazing time where I have experienced a lot. From mint tea in Moroccan medinas to a delicious pad thai from a street food vendor in Thailand. My favourite way to travel is slowly, so I can work with enough time to explore the local area, take in all the smells and colours, and meet the wonderful locals. Taking around three to explore each country allows you to get really acquainted with the culture, create precious memories and make lifelong friends wherever you go.
Here’s a few of my experiences of working from different countries that I’ve enjoyed:
Firstly, Portugal. Lisbon is a must for anyone. Food and drinks are a reasonable price, accommodation from airbnb was cosy, people are friendly and beaches to surf are close by. My only advice is to go in the European summer months. Winter months can be cold and cloudy. There are also some good hostels if you want to meet other travellers. Home Hostel is my recommendation if you want Mamma’s dinner and good company. For Digital Nomads, there are a few coworking spaces and cafes close by that provide good wifi.
Secondly, Greece. So there are so many places in Greece that I love, but in this post, I will talk about Crete. Crete has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. My favourite being Balos beach… I could spend all my time there but I had to make the most of the island. We hired a car and explored other amazing beaches and waterfalls. The best place to stay in Crete is Boho Hostel (Used to be called Chania hostel). The wifi in this hostel was good, but finding a quiet place to work was tricky. I recommend walking into Chania old town and sitting in one of the restaurants/cafes.
Thirdly, Indonesia. Bali! Every digital nomad and their cousin has been to Bali. It’s that good that I have to mention it. It’s the spiritual hub of the world. In my time there, I did lots of surfing, yoga and breathwork, ecstatic and contact dancing, energy healing, and riding around on a scooter to explore the coastline and mountains. I also highly recommend doing a volcano hike. Digital Nomads should go to Dojo Bali to work at least once. I also recommend The Farm hostel, but book in advance as it’s always sold out.
Fourth, Thailand. So Thailand is very special to me. It was where I did my first ever solo trip. I always go back to Koh Tao and stay at Big Blue diving school, so I can dive and play with the fishes. They always bring in a good group of travellers and adventurers. Koh Tao is also the cheapest place in the world to learn how to dive. There are so many amazing cafes to work, drink and eat. I really recommend this beautiful island.
And I’ll stop at five, my last place on this list is Turkey. What an epic country to explore. Istanbul is full of bazaars and is a thriving city, whilst the coast is very laid back and the sea is an incredible shade of blue. The people are so friendly and kind… inviting you for free tea and chats. Cheers Hostel is the place to be! It was voted best hostel in Turkey 2020.
