Best fitness apps for when you are a digital nomad
You can download an app for almost anything these days. From ordering take out to ghost hunting spirits, whatever you want there’s bound to be an app for it.
While not all apps are created equal, and some might not strike you as all that useful...some of the best apps on the market pertain to your fitness. Health and fitness is big business so there are (literally) hundreds of companies competing for your custom.
As a digital nomad it can sometimes be hard to stick to a routine and maintain a fitness regime on the road. Luckily in this modern world we can turn to an app to give us a motivation boost, as well as to provide some variety and coherence to our workouts.
I’ve gathered some of what I think are the best fitness apps for you to peruse and find one that suits your style.
Running
Depending on what you’re looking for in your running game there are numerous apps to keep you moving.
If you’re new to running (or fitness in general)this is a great app. It promises to get you from couch potato to running 5k in 9 weeks with gentle interval training.
For established runners this app helps you discover new routes, set your distance and time yourself. It has very thorough maps across the united states and in many cities around the world.
If you’ve got a need for speed then this is the app for you. iSmoothRun has so many features that runners are raving about but one of it’s top attractions is its interval trainer.
Yoga
It seems like there is a new yoga app coming out daily at the moment, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favourites for you to try out.
The makers of gorgeous soft yoga clothes now have their very own app filled with classes from teachers you may or may not recognise from Instagram fame. You can access the classes both on and offline which is perfect if you haven’t got a dependable wifi connection.
One of the most flexible yoga apps out there (excuse the pun), in that you get to set the class that you follow exactly how you like. Want a full 90 minute practice focusing on core strength at intermediate level 2? You got it. Only got time for 8 minutes of sun salutations in the morning? No problem. Based on a monthly or yearly membership you can sign up and see how you like it before committing to the longer plan.
This app has videos from experienced teachers across a wide range of yoga styles. Another app where you can download videos to follow offline and on which you can tailor the duration of your class depending on how long you want to practise for. My favourite feature on Yoga Anytime is the ‘Our Practices’ series, where you get to follow along with teachers on their own personal practice.
HIIT
A very popular workout style, maximum effort but minimum time to get the best results- great for digital nomads who love to sweat but can’t fit a traditional full length workout into a full on schedule.
Based on the principle that 7 minutes of sustained high intensity training is as good as half an hour in the gym, this app gives you a few different workouts to choose from depending on what you want to work on, and all can be completed in 7 minutes, to fit into even the busiest days.
From the founder of the Bikini Body Guide comes the ultimate HIIT app. 28 minute workouts to be don 3 times a week. While some of the workouts do call for a small amount of equipment, most are body weight based, and I’ve found that any props needed can usually be improvised.
This app has a good variety of workouts that you can customise to your own style and desired duration. You can also track the calories burnt during a workout and have the app send you push notifications to remind you when it’s exercise time.
Nike do amazing free work out apps for training and running. You can change the level and the training app is a good full body workout. The running app has coaches who help you on your run. Check them out.
I hope you’ve found something here to try out in your next session. Have you got a favourite fitness app that I haven’t mentioned? Send me a message and let me know!
